Simple enough question. If your main (or only) car had to be replaced today. What would you replace it with?
Everything in your life is the same (no dead uncle’s or lottery winnings) but for some reason your car is gone (pterodactyls?) and you have to replace it what do you buy?
I have narrowed my choices down to 3 vehicles. It would probably come down to which ever I could get for the cheapest.
Ram SRT-10, as much as I dislike full size manual trucks. I can make an exception here.
C4 Zr1, it would probably have to be one of the 385HP one’s the later 405HP one’s are a little too expensive.
W211 E63 AMG, I think I have enough equity built up in my house to refinance it for any repairs that may come up.

That’s easy I’d replace my Jetta TDI with another Jetta TDI. Why? I need the fuel mileage and I already have one gas guzzler.

I prefer something smallish since it makes town driving easier and more fun. So I’d probably go for the hot hatch version of my car, a Twingo 133. Fast for the kind of driving I do and tiny enough to thread through side streets with ease.

First I’m assuming I get insurance money for my Cruze, because it’s completely paid off. If that’s the case I would put a nice down payment on:
-New Mustang Ecoboost with the performance package
-Used Cadillac ATS with the 2.0 Turbo/6spd Manual
If I’m not getting any money back from insurance, I’d probably buy a Jeep Cherokee (XJ 4.0L) and a used motorcycle. I’d ride the bike on nice days to save fuel, and the Jeep for crappy weather.
The two things I’d really want to replace my Cruze with but aren’t available yet:
-6th Gen Camaro SS
-Jeep Renegade with the 1.6L Turbo and 6spd manual (can only get 2.4L/auto right now)

NONE! If something happened to my current DD 2013 Ford Fusion. I’d just avoid car payments all together and drive my paid off 1986 Chevy C20 full time.
And instead of selling my Lincoln I would keep it as my weekend car.

Three possibilities.
Another E36, but with a manual this time. Maybe not an M.
An early 2000s Pathfinder with the more powerful 3.5L V6.
Later S10 Extended cab 4WD ZR2.

I am not very wealthy right now so I’d probably save up for a few months and go with an old crown vic. Cheap to get, cheap to maintain, sort of a legend status and you don’t have to care about it. If it gets a dent or two “meh”.

If I had to replace my 135is, it would be with a used E92 M3 convertible. I want a convertible with more room than the 135is but still fun, and while the 335is also is nice, I want an LSD and don’t want to go aftermarket.
If I had to replace both my 135is and my Grand Cherokee with just one vehicle, it would be with some kind of performance-y awd luxury sedan, for Wisconsin winter, and yes I would get snow tires also. But that’s boring.

Something that averages at least 15 mpg.

Oooooh. I like this game. I’ll assume that though my car has “vanished” I no longer owe money on it and I’m given what would remain of it’s trade in value less the amount that I still owe on it (realistically $2-3k).
Since it’s my only car, I still need something that’s reasonably practical and has a comfortable driving position. It’s hard to go back to a sedan after going hatchback as well, so that’s a must. I’m also the type to worry about finances a little much, so reasonable cost and decent fuel economy are on the table. And I’d kind of like something that’s fun to drive. I miss the smile my Miata would put on my face, but not the cramped quarters.
Oh look, it’s for sale right now:
I’d prefer performance blue to white, but at least it would stay cool in the summer.
![]() 05/27/2015 at 13:19 |

Most non-M BMWs have open diffs. The traction control includes brake-based torque vectoring which works reasonably well in aggressive cornering. On my car, I actually prefer Dynamic traction control mode (it turns off stability control and allows more wheelspin before traction control kicks in) for the twisties rather than turning it all the way off. But while that helps with turning, on acceleration the car is very capable of lighting a one-tire fire before the traction control reins things in.
M cars have computer-controlled LSDs, and in the past year or so BMW has started offering mechanical, clutch-type LSDs as a dealer- or port-installed accessories on certain cars like the M235i.

Agreed - I like it’s looks, but it is a quirky look and not everybody does. Hopefully Gen II does better. It’s very fun to drive, especially with some sticky tires (I use MPSS in the summer, awesome), plus costs me about $50/month in fuel and electric. I generally get about 1100-1200 miles from an 8 gallon fillup (9 gallon tank).

well there’s the engine, the base 3.0 V6 only put out 270hp. I’d also have to swap in the manual transmission. Then brakes and suspension upgrades at least on top of that.

I just bought a certified 2012 Cadillac CTS. Decent mileage, super comfy, good looking, spacious car. Happy so far, but somewhat concerned about longterm reliability, cause GM gonna GM.
![]() 05/27/2015 at 15:20 |

I have them too, just save for the weekends. My commute really isn’t that long, I can just squeeze in my daily drive on all electric mode when I’m using the heat. In the summer I’ve got miles to spare. It costs about $.80 for me to fully charge the battery and it’s basically the equivalent of what would have been my first gallon of gas in a fuel efficient car - 30-40 miles on a charge, and on gas alone it gets 30-40 MPG (30 on a bad day in the winter).
Weekend gas guzzler:
(which actually gets better MPG with the mighty 455 than my ‘05 Yukon with the 8.1 got, and has more power!)
![]() 05/27/2015 at 15:33 |

I’m not super crazy about the looks, but I think it could be worse. I just like that it’s a capable “soft-roader” for around $20k with AWD and a manual gearbox, has lots of space to haul my camping gear, guns, fishing rods, etc., gets good gas mileage, and would be equally at home commuting to work every day in Washington DC as it would be going out a rocky, dirt road to a campsite.

i’m probably going to go to a junkyard and pick up two new fenders and spray paint them. the car is 14 years old, what do i care about color? it has almost 290K miles in it, so the engine is just getting broken in.
i’ve been driving it for about 8 years now, and i wouldn’t give my clanky-sounding car for anything!

You could always get the Dupli-Color paint if they offer it anywhere near you. I used it on the Alero I had before and the paint matched perfectly.
Sucks I can’t do that on my Yukon. It has blue metallic paint and I’m scared to use anything.
